5 Cally Road

For 18 months I was Creative Lead on an oral history project run by On the Record, celebrating the history of 5 Caledonian Road, a building at the heart of radical politics in the UK for the past 50 years.

 

From 2020-2021, a group of 25 young volunteers conducted over 50 hours of interviews with people whose lives had passed through the building, gathering oral history to tell the story of this iconic place. They conducted research into the political movements, protests and organisations who were part of its history.

 

Using the interviews, archive and research, I worked with the volunteers to turn their material into a range of creative pieces including poetry, radio plays, monologues, pop songs and animations. All of their work was platformed on an immersive website: www.5callyroad.org

 

In the summer of 2021 the soundscapes were part of a sound installation at Housmans bookshop that was free and open to the public for several months. There is a permanent display showing material from the project in Housmans.
